Days off are wonderful
Oct. 8th, 2007 04:46 pmNot only did I have a lovely day researching quattrocento Italian art and culture, I picked up a new Smith sweatshirt ("Smith College Alumna," white and pale blue letters on dark blue, very spiffy) at a huge discount, and had a lovely lunch at the Student Center.
I also found out something very satisfying about my research that makes it clear that, even though I'm not a Ph.D. candidate, I'm indeed doing cutting edge research.
*squees for a moment, then goes back to work*
Hope everyone's having a good day!

Question for the costume geeks....
Oct. 8th, 2007 05:49 pmIs anyone else as nervous about Elizabeth: The Golden Age as I am? I'm not a costuming expert by any means, but what I've seen is bothering the heck out of me, especially some of the stuff in the image gallery.
I'm also very bothered by the director saying that the part is written as dealing simultaneously with the Spanish Armada (1588) and Elizabeth's "realization" that she was too old for love and children. It seems to have escaped his attention that Elizabeth was fifty-five at the time of the Armada, well past childbearing age, and that many scholars believe she never married because she saw the disaster a husband could bring to a queen regnant in her cousin Mary Stuart's fiasco of a reign.
Opinions?

Which could be controlled just as easily with the Pill. However, whatever happened to the word "uterus"????
It's rather like the word "mother," which has been almost entirely replaced by "mom" in the news, even when referring to the mothers of grown children....
