[Error: unknown template qotd]I was about eighteen months or so, and I was talking to my aunt and my mother while they were diapering me. We were in the living room of my grandmother's farm house in Van, Pennsylvania, and I distinctly remember asking Mum about the baby powder she was using.

*Why* I remember this, I have no idea. Perhaps it was the sense of warmth and security I felt there, on the burgundy plush sofa with wooden arms, in the room with the pale gray wallpaper with a pattern of aqua, face powder pink, and white snowflakes, in the house where my family had lived since they'd left Pittsburgh during the Depression and come north to the land they owned in Venango County.
