I have been in the SCA for almost 20 years. I am proud to be a Companion of the Laurel, and a peer of the East. I have served my Barony in various capacities, and I will continue to serve her, and my Kingdom, for years to come.
Many years ago I was involved in a Baronial election that went down to the wires. Fortunately, our seneschal was told the night before the event that my then-husband and I had lost the election by a few votes, so we were prepared for the other candidates to be invested. Given the people involved, it was probably for the best. I received my AoA at that event, and met the woman who became my first Laurel, and generally had a good time despite the disappointment.
So. I have some appreciation for elections going south, and things coming down to the deadline. I have never, EVER read anything this ungracious in my SCA career. There may well be an explanation - someone might have been told to call the candidates in advance and dropped the ball, or the decision may have been reached that day, or communication on the day of might not have taken place for various reasons - but I'm very bothered that this was seemingly sprung on the presumptive candidates without warning.
So. I'd already decided to spend the daylight hours of Wednesday of War Week in Pittsburgh having lunch with Denise and visiting friends. If more information on this affair doesn't surface fairly soon I may well stay later than I'd planned - I know there are two sides to every story, but this one leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth no matter what happens, and it may spoil me for EK Court.
I hope and pray that there is an explanation forthcoming from Their Majesties, as this is a truly horrible situation for everyone involved. And I sincerely hope that Ruantallan is not torn to shreds by this dreadful event.
ADDENDUM: it was pointed out that the King and Queen haven't spoken publicly on this as yet, and it might be a good idea to contact them. I'll see about doing so when I'm a bit less medicated...Benadryl and chamomile tea do not make for good letters to the royals :D
