I went last night with [livejournal.com profile] harpnfiddle and [livejournal.com profile] sorcieredeneige. We had dinner first, and after a twenty minute wait in line, managed to get decent seats in the front section. No squealing teens close enough to drive me nuts, I heard all the dialogue, and generally, I liked liked it. No spoilers, but may I say that Evanna Lynch is an utter delight, and Imelda Staunton creeped me out? And I did find out what Sirius was doing in a bathrobe, and why it's black and shaggy. :D

Also - saw the usual 6-8 movie trailers. Two stood out:

The Golden Compass - this looks *fabulous*. It's based on Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials, a fantasy series that started strong and turned into an incoherent mess at the end IMHO. The Golden Compass is the first and best book, and the casting, set design, and costumes look *perfect*. I also LOVED Iorek Byrnison, the armored bear, even though he was on-screen for about two seconds.

Get Smart - I was expecting this one to be a train wreck, the way most movie adaptations of old TV series are. Surprise! It looks good! They seem to be doing it as a 1960s period piece, which is the only way to do this one - they even lit it correctly. And Steve Carell looked *fabulous* as Max. He has the same deadpan timing and delivery as Don Adams, and there was a bit of physical comedy involving a telephone that nearly had me on the floor. If this lives up to the trailer, it could be one of the big summer comedies next year.

One more thing...

I have seen the scan of the chapter titles that's circulating a bit, and it looks real. I've also seen several contradictory rumors. I very much wish to have some idea of who lives and who dies...so if you are a librarian and have actually seen the book, feel free to e-mail me so I don't break down crying in a parking lot at 1:00 a.m. and make a total fool of myself. KTHX
