Or, I now have several linoleum samples scattered on the kitchen floor, and several more carpet samples on the living room floor. So far it looks like a multicolored blue is winning for the carpet, and either a cream or a soft beige pseudo-tile for the kitchen, but I want to give it a few days to see how both look under various condition and atmospheric conditions.

As for paint...probably a warm cream with hints of gold. It's light, bright, and neutral enough that it will look new without being obtrusive. New window treatments will wait until the paint is up to see what looks good.

Finally, when it comes to the issue of moving the furniture about...both the contractor and a good friend suggested hiring a moving company to physically remove all the furniture except one small table, two folding chairs, and the piano from the house while the work is done. I'd still pack the books and fragile items myself (and may well draft a couple of people to help with this, if at all possible), but getting large items completely out of the building is probably a good idea. It also means that I'd have a free hand to rearrange the furniture to take better advantage of traffic patterns and suchlike.

We shall see.

This sounds so exciting for you, and it sounds like you are doing it all right.

Moving & temporary storage sound like an excellent notion.

If you pack the fragile stuff you're emotionally attached to yourself (also a good idea), I'd suggest investing in some bubble wrap, and be generous with any other packing materials you use.
