I just applied to the University of Nebraska MA program. I also signed up to take the GRE on September 5th, requested transcripts from Smith and Hartford Seminary, and sent off the recommendation forms to two of the three people I've asked for recommendations (the clinic director and Robin Netherton; the third, an old professor of mine at the Seminary, is out of town until Monday). I still need to send them a statement of educational purposes (no, "I love medieval quilts" is not enough) and my CV, but I've definitely committed.

Any tips on rooting for college mascots would be appreciated, being as neither of my previous institutions had anything even *approaching* this fine gentleman (or a football team, for that matter).

YAY YOU!!!

And don't worry about the football, graduate students tend to keep themselves far above such things so that they can be contemptuous of someone :)

go get a review book for the GRE. It will help to know how the questions are structured and how to answer in the way they are grading.

Totally worth it. Totally.

Yay! I'm so excited for you! I hope all goes well with the admissions process and that a year from now, you'll be heading to grad school! (Even if it's on-line and not in the middle of nowhere, Nebraska! ;-p)

You know what - with your memory for detail, you should have NO trouble with the GRE. I didn't find the math any harder than the SAT (and I didn't take any higher math as an undergraduate except statistics). In fact, I beat my ex's score in the math and he had taken several advanced math and calculus courses. Of course, I took it in 1975 - it may have changed a little since then.

For me, the Miller's Analogies Test was a killer, and I needed that for Catholic (The Catholic University of America) where I eventually ended up (even though I never was Catholic). I don't think in analogies and barely passed the thing.

Yes, this.

The GREs are constantly changing, and you'll want to know how they're being administered.

There's something with computers or something. It scares even me.

I took it on the computer 3 years ago. It was not bad at all. Of course, I compare it to the old style nursing boards I took (5 hrs a day for 2 days) so who knows.

I knew how I had done before I left, so that was nice.

the review books are KEY.

Not for at least eighteen months, and then only for a semester. Everything else will be done via distance learning. I may well move after I finish up (2011 or thereabouts), but where I go will depend at least partly on whether the state has laws against the denial of health insurance for pre-existing conditions....

Ouch. That's something I need to think of as well....
Otherwise I'm stuck in NYS for the rest of my life.

Having just taken the GREs in January, when you sign up they'll automatically send you a CD that instructs you on the software used, and has two practice tests. I went to the bookstore a couple of times and leafed through the GRE books without actually buying one, and found the information on the GRE website perfectly fine.

...wow, my college mascot was a bullet. Having a real person allows for a much less awkward costume.

This. I hate this with the passion of a thousand burning suns. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeevil.

That's another reason I stick it out with my doc-- Medicare has a whole list of pre-existing conditions they won't cover... the bastids!! :)

BTW your current state of mental well being is just oozing out of your posts now! Congrats! :)

Obviously, you need to make a quilt with his image on it!!!

Good luck with your program!

Yup, a quilt! Or a small banner if you actually go to any of the games... or maybe a vest or jacket... maybe a pattern of ears of corn instead of the mascot himself? Deep green and gold, with some embroidered tassels...

Hey, when I talked to the Graduate Director for my program at UMass, he said some interesting things about that statement. It's not so much "I'm a really hard worker" that they want to read, but "I want to work with Prof. (fill in the blank) on (fill in subject matter). I've already done this research and produced these papers...."

Just my 2 Knuts.

Good luck! I need to take my GREs again too. I took them in 1994, but ETS dumps the scores after 5 years. Hey, I've been a little busy since then, y'know?
