Does anyone on my list have a Kindle? If so, do you like it? I have a lot of problems with the device being so closely linked to Amazon.com, Destroy of Many Bookstores, but a comparable non-Amazon device would be mighty handy when traveling.
You could try the Sony Reader; AFAIK they haven't destroyed any bookstores (but don't believe the ads that say it's sexier than your librarian--*nothing* is sexier than a librarian :->).
For about the same price as a Kindle you could get a netbook, which would give you all the functionality of a notebook, easy reading, and is about the size of a reader. I got an Acer Aspire One a couple of months ago and have been very happy with it.
I have the same netbook, and love it so far. Is there software for it that would allow me to read electronic books? I was just thinking about that yesterday evening, oddly enough.
Otherwise--I keep seeing ads for the Sony reader. It looks like they're setting it up as competition for the Kindle. (Up here in Canada, they're pretty much the only game unless you order a Kindle from the States.)
I have tons of fanfic archived as .rtf files and do most of my reading in that form.. I also have a lot of original books as MS Reader files and some ..pdfs and have no problems with them.Mobibook and Ereader also do well, but I don't use them much. Fictionwise and similar ebooksellers have tons of books in various formats, also, so you aren't tied to one format like you are with the Kindle. Another advantage of the other formats is that if you have a smartphone or Pocket PC phone all these other formats can be used *on your phone*.. I literally have years of reading material stored on a Mini-SD card on my phone and accessible whenever I want.
I've been reading e-books on my iPhone, using a free app named Stanza. I was a little dubious about serious reading on that small screen, but it's actually quite readable and intuitive. (Yes, one can customize the font size and things like that.)
