A visitor showed up at my company today. I only got a glimpse of him, but when I spotted the Polar Fleece hat, well worn jeans, etc., I assumed that it was one of the typical aging professorial types who populate the Happy Valley.

I was wrong.

Our visitor was this fine gentleman, who had been invited to drop by last month during a perfect orgy of lobbying and conference attendance down in Washington. I'm not sure anyone expected him to actually *show*, but by God he did....

That's the problem with issuing invitations. They are likely to be accepted. Especially by politicians. ;-)

Ah, but he *is* an aging professorial type! He and my Dad taught together in the Chemistry department at UMass way back when. So you weren't wrong - you just weren't completely right.

One thing I didn't know: he's VERY tall, probably around 6'4" or thereabouts.

Would you believe he's in his 70s? He doesn't look it at all.

True. Although this one was about as unpretentious as it's possible to get. He could be any elderly rural man in New England, and that's really nice.

Can I pass this on to Anne (SCA: Anne de Northwoode) who is one of his DC staffers? She will be VERY AMUSED.
