The man who (allegedly) shot a security guard at the Holocaust Museum was one of those peculiar people who believed that the Holocaust did not happen and that The Diary of Anne Frank was an Evil Jewish Hoax. The Holocaust Museum was supposed to stage a play based on the diary today.

Coincidence? Probably not.

I always want to set such people to finding out what, then, happened to some real documented people. Say i_g's g-grandmother Frieda Mendelsohn, for whom the paper trail speaks for itself. She had a birth certificate, a marriage certificate; her children had birth certificates; she's on the 1938 Breslau census. Then she's on a transport record from Theresienstadt to Auschwitz. Or maybe all those are fakes.

Mendelsohn? Was she related to Moses Mendelsohn?

As for Holocaust deniers, my Uncle Lou helped to liberate the camps. He knew better, and made sure I did, too. They should be *ashamed* of themselves, spreading such trash.

Appalling!
I remember at Uni, all the modern German History books in the library stacks had pamphlets inserted in them, stating that the Holocaust was a hoax or a conspiracy or something like that. The pamphlets had the worst images printed on them; and the language was foul.
I was so angry - I had been compiling such distressing facts for a presentation I had to give, using as much primary source material as I could, and I'd been having nightmares for weeks, and then to read this filth - I totally lost it.
I spent the rest of the day going through all the books, shelf after shelf in the stacks, and removing the pamphlets, thinking "fuck freedom of speech!" - "if you're going to claim the right of freedom of speech you are obligated to tell the best truth you can, using the best sources you can find" - something I've not thought before or since. And then dumping these hundreds of pamphlets in the bins, and then going to the lav to vomit until I was bringing up bile. The filth on these pamphlets - it was indescribable.
So although I'm horrified by this shooting, in a way I'm not shocked. The things they were printing.

My m-i-l used to hope so, but actually it's just that Frieda's own great-grandfather was Mendel, with no surname. Frieda's grandfather was the first to adopt one, hence Mendelsohn.
