The man who (allegedly) shot a security guard at the Holocaust Museum was one of those peculiar people who believed that the Holocaust did not happen and that The Diary of Anne Frank was an Evil Jewish Hoax. The Holocaust Museum was supposed to stage a play based on the diary today.
Coincidence? Probably not.

Date: 2009-06-12 02:06 am (UTC)From:I remember at Uni, all the modern German History books in the library stacks had pamphlets inserted in them, stating that the Holocaust was a hoax or a conspiracy or something like that. The pamphlets had the worst images printed on them; and the language was foul.
I was so angry - I had been compiling such distressing facts for a presentation I had to give, using as much primary source material as I could, and I'd been having nightmares for weeks, and then to read this filth - I totally lost it.
I spent the rest of the day going through all the books, shelf after shelf in the stacks, and removing the pamphlets, thinking "fuck freedom of speech!" - "if you're going to claim the right of freedom of speech you are obligated to tell the best truth you can, using the best sources you can find" - something I've not thought before or since. And then dumping these hundreds of pamphlets in the bins, and then going to the lav to vomit until I was bringing up bile. The filth on these pamphlets - it was indescribable.
So although I'm horrified by this shooting, in a way I'm not shocked. The things they were printing.
