According to the Washington Post:

"...according to a hospital spokeswoman, from the time von Brunn entered the emergency room, through his surgery in the operating room, to his placement in the intensive-care unit, [James von Brunn, the accused shooter at the Holocaust Museum] has been under the care of a diverse medical staff that includes blacks, Jews and Middle Easterners."

Given how virulently this charming individual hated anyone who wasn't a bitter, nasty, somewhat insane white Christian male, waking up to find that his doctors and nurses are black and Jewish and Arab may well kill him.

Does it make me a bad person that I'm semi-hoping that this will indeed happen?

I feel for his healthcare providers. I wish I had a dollar for everytime I had someone look at me (when I still worked in the medical field) and then demand to be treated by a white nurse or doctor. It's something you get used to. Some places apologise to the patient and make a notation at the nurses station. Avoidance. Some places send a guard in who tells the patient he's welcome to refuse treatment, which is how they'll register his complaints, because they're not going to pander to prejudice and he's welcome to find a hospital that will... and good luck with that. Makes treating them a minefield of unremitting stress.

My aunt was like that toward the end of life. She'd always been profoundly snobbish, but Denise was horrified by her behavior toward non-whites during her final illness. I can only hope it was illness and encroaching senility; the rest of the family (especially my parents) were as free of bigotry as anyone of their generation, and I've done my best to go beyond that in my own life.

Then again, a steady diet of Rush Limbaugh and Fox News will do a lot to poison a sick old woman's mind....
