Aren't people who've been called to the bar exempt, anyway?

Not in the United States. I used to work in a law firm, and one of the attorneys was called for jury duty right in the middle of preparing an appeal brief. She asked to be excused on the grounds that a) she was a practicing attorney and b) the Appeals Court has very strict guidelines. The judge told her a) you practice in a different town and b) this trial will take two days, tops.

He was right about the length of the trial, she made her appeal deadline, and all was well.

I remember getting a notice, in the fall of 1984, that I needed to sign up for Selective Service or I would go to jail. My Drill Sergeant had to write them and inform them that not only had I signed up back in 1981 but I was also, at that point, in Basic Training at FT Knox, KY. Sometimes the clerks of the Our Government are bloody idiots....

And then there are the occasional stories about household pets being called for jury duty....

And the time, in full council met, that was read the summons for:

"Carolingia, Barony of"

After the laughter subsided, they got down to figuring out how "jury of ones peers" applied in the SCA...
