There were a bunch of names that I recognized, but couldn't honestly say I knew why they were famous. Leaving those out, I got about 54. Humph.

The depressing thing is how many of the names I recognize because they are brand names. How many men are brand names?

I got about 50, not counting names I think I've heard of but couldn't describe. Also, hooray for scientists! Glad to see them on the list!

With a couple of minutes of thought: L. L. Bean, Marriott, Hilton, Ford, Trump, Kellogg, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger.

Good point. One could also add Macy's, Hershey, Post, R.J. Reynolds, Levi's, F.A.O. Schwartz, and a good fraction of other U.S. corporation names. But I would argue that most of the examples (male and female) outside the fashion industry have been de-individualized: they're now just a brand-name, and not many people know the full name of the person they were named after, or even that there was such a person.

Come to think of it, I think the real distinction isn't so much male vs. female as fashion-industry vs. anywhere-else. Off the top of my head, the only non-fashion-industry brand-name that's still identified with an individual is George Foreman.

I'm betting you might have heard of #92 under her stage name. That's Lady GaGa.
