I was chatting with my mother and my aunt Betty as they diapered me and patted baby powder on my posterior. We were at my grandmother's house, on her burgundy plush sofa in the living room, and I could probably draw the gray wallpaper with white and pale pink snowflakes in a 1950s pattern.

I was no more than eighteen months old, tops.

That is very young. My earliest memory is of looking up at the Noddy and Big Ears lampshade above my bed in the house we left when I was three. But a friend's son (not sure if this counts because he was only four when he said this) asked his mother, in my hearing, 'Where was it I was lying on your tummy and there were lots of people in green clothes?' - he hadn't been in hospital since arriving by caesarian. Spooky.

I was about 14 months and my dad came home and I walked down the front path to meet him. According to family legend, I'd never even tried walking before that. I saw Dad and off I went! I can still see the big laughing grin he had on his face as he picked me up ans swung me in the air. :)
