The weird noises in the crawl space turned out to be mice, not squirrels. I according had an exterminator come today and leave baits and traps up there, in the garage, and by the water heater. Fortunately there's no sign that they've gotten in the house, likely because they can smell the cats (and woe to the mouse that thinks it can get past Diamond, is all I'm saying).
Estimated time for the little !#$$@!@$ to consume the bait and quietly die is about one week. Roomie and I are *so* relieved.....
