I just bought a new computer, a sweet Lenovo desktop, and a sleek, slim, light Samsung monitor go to with it. This is my tax refund, boys and girls, and it's something that I've been wanting to do for quite some time. My current computer is an 8 year old eMachines with only 504 RAM (that's meg, not gig) that takes five minutes to warm up and is constantly interrupted by messages from Norton as it scans each and every application for viruses.

In short, it's a dinosaur. I'm planning to move it to the Garrett, deinstall Firefox, AOL, and Yahoo, and use it exclusively as a word processor until its poor little processors give out completely. That's really all it's good for at this point, and for all that it's given me good and faithful service, and doesn't owe me a dime, the last six months have shown me that technology has passed the poor thing by.

I've been planning this for weeks, doing my research, backing up all my data files, and dreaming of having a new, powerful, fast machine that will boot immediately and run Open Office without issues. It's what I wanted, and I've just been waiting for the Lenovo to go on sale.

This is what I wanted, and it's long overdue. So why am I feeling so melancholy at getting a new computer?

It's the passing of an era. I get that feeling; I've been refusing to give up on my car for, um, possibly longer than is best.

It still runs, dammit! (And I get great fuel economy!)

This is why I don't really like opening presents. I love receiving presents! But the potential of what they might be is so much greater, so much more exciting, than whatever the reality is, however good.
