First, I had a bear show up in my background about two weeks ago. And now...

A skunk seems to be frequenting the neighborhood. As in, right under my bedroom window.

*wails*

Had a conversation with someone this weekend who said that, for a while, there was a skunk that made its presence known twice a day...

How frequently? Was talking with fitzw about it last night, and he wondered if there were access to the area under your deck... might be a place a skunk would like to have a home.

If the backyard is overgrown, he/she probably likes that as well. Mind you, they'll travel open spaces too -- one was making a home under one of the porches at the farm, years ago. But overgrown areas are a plus for them.

Just a couple of things for thought. Personally, I wouldn't be keen on having to go back there to check if the skunk is living under the deck, but maybe you can find someone who has some experience?

Simple anti-skunk repellent - moth balls. If you're gettting as much rain as we are, they'll melt away, but you can always re-apply. Luckily, the stuff's pretty inexpensive.

Also, does the backyard fence still need repair? I'm curious as to how the various wildlife is getting in.

Bear prevention might be a little harder. If you're putting out birdseed, don't for a while. I'd also recommend walking a neighbor's dog around the perimeter of your property for a few days. It's not a sure thing, but bears will often avoid recent dog scent.
