If that's knitted, then it's a stitch I've NEVER seen before, and I've been knitting professionally for ... erm, many years now. It's possible, certainly, but I'd need a much better look at it.

My first thought was crochet, with popcorn stitches, but the time (and place and everything else) is all wrong.

I believe they were playing shawms.

Also, the so-called Medici Quintet of Stradvarii was on loan at the Accademia from the Cherubini Conservatory. The instruments are still played, as could be seen from the wear marks in the varnish on the back of the second viola....:)
