I heard a very disturbing story on NPR about residents of states that refuse to comply with the federal "Real ID" law being denied the right to air travel. I checked, and fortunately for me, Massachusetts has an extension until 2009 to comply.

*had sudden visions of having to *drive* to Kalamazoo in May*

The view from far away:

I remember seeing film of German citizens during the time of Hitler having to show "their papers" before being allowed to travel within the country.

I live in NH, where we will end up with this problem. Currently not an issue for me (scared of airports, not airplanes or flying oddly enough, it's the airports that trip the panic attacks) but when I *am* up for flying again, I'll need to get a passport, to travel within my own country. I haven't the words for this.
In the all to true words of Teresa Nielsen Hayden "I resent this administration for making me feel like a raving nutjob"

This sums up my feelings as well. I never thought that the first time I'll be using my passport is to travel within my own country.

Did they say anything about getting into federal buildings? Not quite sure how they will manage to get people in to get a passport if their driver's license isn't a RealID compliant one.

Thank goodness! My drivers licence expires this May and I was planning to renew it a week or two early to avoid any unpleasantness caused by having foreign documentation.

I'd renew it ASAP, to be honest. I don't trust this government at all.

I Know This Wasn't The Point...

...but we've driven to Kalamazoo from Noo Yawk; it isn't so bad (I-80 nearly all the way).

ObPolitical: No, I don't trust the government, either; I haven't trusted it for years :-(

As another proud resident of New Hampshire, I, too, will need my passport for air travel. Other Half will have to renew his or stay home.

There's that scene in 'Hunt for Red October' where one of the Russians anticipates traveling from state to state in his RV without papers. Of course, he's just been shot, and won't live to see land. It may well become a fantasy for us as well...
