But I can't help wondering why Hillary Clinton would willingly give an interview to a right-wing rag that is owned, controlled, and financed by Richard Mellon Scaife, the man who financed the "vast right-wing conspiracy" that almost destroyed her husband's candidacy. Is she really that desperate?

More to the point, is someone who would consort with someone who attempted to wreck her entire family a decade ago showing the sort of character America needs in its next President?

Note for those not familiar with Pittsburgh:

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is owned by Richard Mellon Scaife, the ultra-conservative billionaire who financed the infamous Arkansas Project. The paper became a daily when the old Pittsburgh Press folded in the early 1990's, and promotes itself as an alternative to the traditionally liberal Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

It's not as bad as the Moonie-owned Washington Times when it comes to slanting the news, but it's not far off. It's also not nearly as popular as it claims to be; when my aunt died two years ago I asked the funeral director about printing an obituary in the Trib as well as the Post-Gazette and he told me flat-out that the paper has a very limited circulation area so I shouldn't waste my money. Local gossip has it that the Trib would have gone under years ago if Scaife didn't keep pumping his own money into it so he'd have a reliable media organ.

This, more than anything else, is why I'm appalled that Hillary Clinton would so much as spit in the Trib's direction. Scaife spent millions of dollars doing everything but hiring a man on a grassy knoll to bring her and her husband down, and now she's giving interviews to his newspaper?

Well, I don't know much about that, but I am appalled that she would call Rev. Wright's remarks "hate speech." (And let's not get into the subject of what her statement about Obama leaving over it says about her ecclesiology.) Personally, I kind of agree with him about the US reaping what it sowed in 9-11. Not to say that it was America's fault, but that America has long had a pretty shitty policty toward Arab countries. My one disappointment in Barack is that he is so gung-ho pro-Israel. I'm kind of hoping that his good UCC background will temper that a bit.

I more and more am thinking that Clinton is not an acceptable alternative to Obama, which leaves me wondering: if she somehow won the nomination, would I actually vote for McCain instead? Surely that's a sign of the apocalypse, that I would even think of voting for a Republican in a presidential election.

God, I wish that Obama would start really pulling ahead. I'm ready for us to settle this thing. When's the next primary?

Someone on Daily Kos pointed out that Rev. Wright was preaching in a very traditional African-American style, completely with shout-outs by the congregation. Evidently this is too scary for whitebread America....

And I would personally like to see the *complete* sermon that was strip-mined for those quotes. I'll bet the overall effect is somewhat different.

Yes, Wright has a Pentecostal background, very much improvising and getting into a rhythm with the congregation. You get caught up in the spirit of the moment, and sometimes you say things that in a more rational moment you might phrase a bit differently.

I have to say that if I'd been a member of *this* church growing up, instead of the Catholic church, I might not be an atheist today.

I agree regarding seeing complete sermons. You cannot judge this man's views based on a couple of sound bytes.

Besides, weren't we just worrying about whether Obama is Muslim? Geeze, American Media, pick one already!

I am more than done with Clinton. I'm actually considering voting for McCain if she gets the Democratic nod (which luckily is highly doubtful). The Bosnia thing and now this whole Rev. White thing is making me sicker than sick.

And I was a committed supporter of hers until a short while ago. Now I'm just ashamed of her.

Y'know, Roomie and I were saying the same thing, even though we both were going to vote Democrat regardless to protect the Supreme Court. But Bosnia, and the race baiting, and now giving what turns out to be a ninety minute videotaped interview to the Tribune-Review...

I can't take it. I simply can't. The Trib is owned by a man who threw millions of dollars into an attempt to destroy her husband and her family. Is she so desperate to win that she'll prostitute herself with the enemy?
