I always believed oil was the reward for the war in Iraq, not the cause. The cause was the glory attached to the Bush name. Because his father has stopped halfway, Georgie had decided to go to war with Saddam the moment the last votes were recounted in Florida and of course he got buddies left and right who saw the oil potentials. That however was not the first issue of Bush himself; he would be the man who brought the tyrant down..... before the Iraqi's did it themselves... and he must have expected a long campaign towards it. 9-11 was a golden change thrown into his lap as was the Malidives occupation ( Falklands) into Margaret Tatcher's lap years before.
From the outset, I thought the war in Iraq was a vendetta. Daddy Shrub couldn't get it done, so Baby Shrub would do what was needed, even if it meant ignoring things like the Geneva convention and our Constitution.
The oil and various other contracts were all icing on the cake. It kept his rich cronies happy and richer, which meant more money in his coffers when it came time for re-election.
What surprises me is that I saw this coming. From the beginning. I knew he was lying about the WMDs and damned near everything else and knew that getting into it in the Middle East was a Huge, Bad Thing (as bad, if not worse, than Viet Nam). And I'm not a scholar.
I've read a little bit about women in medieval and more recent Muslim culture. I suppose it was enough to know that getting in the middle of their issues was a bad thing. It bugs me that I had more of a clue than the "experts".
