Got an excellent estimate from Pioneer Valley Rebuilders, plus testimonials from several people I know and trust. Roomie talked to them as well and said they sound very knowledgeable.
So...here's what's going to be done:
1. New carpeting/vinyl in the kitchen, living room, dining area, and hallway.
2. New paint in the living room, hallway, and foyer, in my choice of colors.
3. Repairs to the warped clapboard on the front of the house.
4. New paint on the kitchen cabinets.
I've also asked them for estimates on plumbing repairs to the leaky kitchen sink and the downstairs toilet, which has made a *WHOOOMMMM* noise whenever it's flushed for the last several years. The work will be done after Pennsic because there's no way I'm going to go skipping merrily off to Pennsylvania for a week and leave Roomie to cope by herself.
It'll be like having a new house, only without the hideousness of moving. Sweet.
In other news, the new refrigerator is in place and working just fine. It's so quiet I thought that it wasn't plugged in at first, which goes to show you just how noisy the old one was. Satisfactory, as Nero Wolfe would say.
