I just donated 1/3 of it to Mass Equality, in honor of an anonymous woman who committed suicide in the 1950s. She was a friend of my aunt's and had somehow come to believe that Betty returned her interest. When Betty rejected her, she killed herself.

This has haunted me for years. I know that this is a small, small thing, but it's the only way I can think of to honor this poor woman.

********

The rest will be spent at Pennsic on wool for a Special Project that will make me the Secret Mistress of Patchwork. Details will be forthcoming once I've found suitable cloth.

You need wool? I have a small bag of strips, either 6" or 8" wide and a couple feet long, that my mom had left over from making kilts (real ones). There are two or three plaids (I know one is Ferguson and long enough to make a lady's sash), and I could swear I remember a russet. They all came from a Tartan supplier in Scotland. If you think they might be useful, let me know, and I'll dig it out and give you details on tartan, color, and weight. I'd be happy to find a home for them.

Wouldn't it be better to be the PUBLIC mistress of patchwork? {ducking and running}

That poor sad woman, indeed :( Especially in that day and age, she must have thought suicide was the only way out.

That was a lovely gesture.

such a sad story! and the gesture is not small, I actually find that beautifull that you spare this poor soul some compassion, without knowing her, and so many years -decades- after. This is the gesture of a truly caring and noble soul.

Thanks. I really ache whenever I think of that - they couldn't have been more than thirty when it all happened. The one time my mother talked to me about it, she warned me that it was completely off-limits with Betty. Evidently she still couldn't stand to talk about it forty years later.

*blush*

It's the only thing I can do. I wish I knew her name, but at least I can honor her memory.
