What really gets me is that Dobson et al. really seem to think that they had some *right* to dictate the vice presidential choice, and that no one would figure out what they had done. I'm also quite surprised that McCain agreed to it. If he really wanted to appeal to female voters, why couldn't he have picked a woman with some credentials? Liddy Dole, Olympia Snowe, Condi Rice, Kay Bailey Hutchinson, Christie Whitman - any and all of them would have brought a wealth of experience and political savvy to the ticket. Any of these women could have stepped right into the Presidency if necessary. Then again, none of the above are Dominionists, and some may actually be pro-choice, so of course there's no way the Religious Right could have endorsed them.
Much as I personally dislike Rice, she'd have been a great pick. For one thing she's smart, she's got experience, and then there's the race card: "I see your black man and raise you a black woman!"
At the same time, one can't question her qualifications for high office. Picking her as VP would have at least shown that McCain was serious about competing for Clinton supporters instead of pandering to the Religious Right.
If he HAD picked Dole, I might've seriously considered voting for that ticket, I've admired her for a long time. As is, Palin is, IMNSHO, an insult to intelligent women throughout the country. She doesn't have the national experience (that alone is enough to keep me from taking her seriously) and with all the news about her now coming out... not good and NOT electable.
Golly, I hadn't even heard of dominionism before. Now I've looked it up, I see why you use the word 'terrifying'. My conspiracy theory: the reason that the die-hard Republicans I've seen interviewed are being remarkably breezy about Palin's daughter's pregnancy is that Palin's candidacy is a deliberate aspect of a far-right agenda. Brrrr.
Dominionists are much, much more deeply entrenched in Congress and power elite in Washington than anyone is willing to admit. This is their most blatant grab yet for power, and for the sake of the country, I hope and pray that Obama and Biden are elected. We *cannot* afford to have someone like Palin in line to be President.
Why does this completely not surprise me? I mean, Obama's hugely popular. May as well ban together all the religious rights they can for the vote. So much for actively avoiding Bush tactics, McCain, cause this sure looks like religious pandering to me.
Thanks for drawing my attention to this. I have been out of the news loop lately and was in Moe's watching TV and wondering who that lady was with McCain. Now I know.
Again, I remind myself how glad I am to be in Canada, when our election is likely to be contested over issues such as whether a carbon tax is a good idea and on how much the government should help out the sagging auto industry.
But I've already ordered up my ballot. I still count as an Ohio voter in probably one of the most crucial counties in the state, so hopefully I can make a difference.
