Busy, busy weekend in which I hosted a party, went to church, and nearly burned down my house.
I did indeed host a party and will be posting pictures later in the week; we had a pagan philosopher, the Vicar of Dibley, The Economy Fairy in all her glory, a Raven (though no pallid bust of Pallas), a veteran cosmic rocker, a slightly ticked off (but not mad) scientist, a farmer, a lacemaker in Renaissance-ish garb, and naughty and nice schoolgirls. Food consumed included a cake from Una's mother, Hitler's Brain, and various sundries, and a good time was had by all.
Sunday was devoted to ordering stuff for the church gift shop, and if anyone has ideas on what we can stock that people will buy, let me know ASAP. We've traditionally sold stuff like scented candles, scarves, cards, and women's spirituality stuff, plus lots of Unitarian tchotchkes (do *not* laugh, they do exist). Help?
And as for the near...
This morning I put new, fresh batteries into the smoke alarm, just as I'm supposed to. It had been a while since I'd changed them and I wasn't 100% sure that the leads had caught, but I figured I could check later. I then set about doing laundry, cleaning, and cooking for the Halloween party.
Part of my preparations included lighting a fireplace log so I'd have a roaring blaze when people arrived. I *thought* I opened the damper enough, but about forty-five minutes before Una arrived, I noticed that the air was somewhat thick, and that a *lot* of smoke had accumulated in the bottom of the stairwell. I realized what had happened and immediately doused the fire - and just as I was opening all the doors and windows, the smoke alarm proved that yes, the new batteries most definitely worked.
Fortunately the air was clear (if cold) when people started to arrive, and no damage was done. It was somewhat disconcerting to see long, dark gray smuts on the ceiling of the bathroom the next morning, though....

Date: 2008-11-04 02:49 am (UTC)From:I think this time of year, Christmas ornaments would be nice. Best people to ask would, I think, be the members, maybe by survey or suggestion box. You may have artists or crafters in your membership who'd love to do a line of cards or something like that that you could carry on commission and they would probably sell all the better for coming from members of the community. (for that matter, I'm happy to offer my creations to be sold on a commission basis)
