Part of the difficulty in convincing people that stem cell research should be supported and funded is that previously, it was hard to point beyond nebulous conclusions couched in really long scientific words that stem cell research could prove truly beneficial. Hopefully we're reaching a tipping point in that battle...
This happened while such research was cut off from federal funding. Who knows how many other promising treatments will be developed by labs in other countries because so little was done in the United States over the past eight years?
Oh, absolutely. Well, funding was allowed in the US, but only on stem cell lines that had already been created (no new lines were allowed to be used) which severely hindered the development of new technologies. I know of at least two groups who are working on a cure for Type I (juvenile onset) diabetes using stem cells...
