Forty years ago my parents let me stay up late to watch a grainy, gray live feed of the most extraordinary event in human history.

I have never forgotten it.

My family was camping at Jenny Wiley State Park. My parents went to the lodge to watch it on tv. I'm so glad they did.

And I listened to it on a transistor radio, on holiday in the Isles of Scilly - I'd never been awake in the early hours before except when I was ill.

What I remember was the picture of the footprint on the front of the Parade Magazine. I didn't understand why a footprint would be so special. When it was explained to me, I asked why we hadn't been there before. I assumed we had since someone had told me there was no oxygen on the moon.
