After rebooting, running a system restore, and replacing the keyboard, my old desktop is running smoothly again. Very strange.
I still took the precaution of copying all the data files onto a flash drive and then downloading them to my laptop. I really don't have the cash to replace the desktop thanks to all the money I spent on home improvement, at least until I get my tax refund next year, so if I can get another six months out of it I'll be pleased.
