I just got back from a wonderful Solstice celebration up in Ashfield. Concentus sang, Morris dancers danced the Abbot's Bromley Horn Dance, and despite the cold, we had a wonderful time.
For me the magic the came in unexpected places...the sight of the dancers retreating up the hill, antlers on their shoulders, as local children rode their sled to the bottom...the hearty goulash at Elmer's, and the real hot chocolate that kept me warm...the wonderful clarity of "Green Grow'th the Holly" in the cold, clear air...the stars, a handful of diamonds and salt against the black, black night..."Green Grow the Rushes" from the Morris dancers, and the sword dance they performed after they ate and drank and sang...friends in the tavern, a community of love and choice, as we made our wishes for next year....
Life is very good tonight. The sun is returning, and the world goes on.
