A dear friend's beloved pet is very ill and may be nearing the end. She's heartbroken, and her co-workers are not sympathetic at all. I feel so helpless.....

You're giving her someone who understands, at least. I hope the pet is old; it's hard to have one nearing the end either way, but it's a little easier when you know they've had a good life, and they know they are ready.
