It's time for Ellid's semi-annual link to The Gallery of Unfortunate Easter Cards. countessinn tipped me off to these years ago, and they've become almost as much an Easter tradition at the Last Homely Shack as slaughtering peeps on Holy Saturday.

The one card in Russian makes me nostalgic for Kazakhstan. Khristos' voskrese! (I do not understand why Jesus is a neuter noun in that sentence, no.)

Is *that* what is says? I've always wondered, given the blank look on the soldier's face....

Literally it means "Christ [is] resurrected!" (Russian, of course, doesn't need no stinking copula.) It's the traditional Russian Easter greeting, which you make whenever you meet someone on the holiday; you're also supposed to have a colored egg with you, which you tap against the other person's while shouting said greeting, and if either egg breaks you'll have bad luck. This doesn't sound difficult until you remember how much vodka a Russian holiday involves.

And the soldier has a blank look because in Soviet Russia nobody ever smiled. You should see wedding pictures.
