Busy, busy weekend!
- Friday I stopped by the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians semi-annual meeting down in South Hadley. My women's studies professor from last fall is one of their officers, and I'd contacted her about possibly leading a tour on Saturday at Wistariahurst. I made a little announcement at dinner, met a few people, and came home. I also had to iron my garb for Somer Draw, Bergental's annual archery championship and summer event, because Concentus was singing in the late afternoon/early evening.
- Saturday I went back to South Hadley, met five delightful historians, and conducted a bang-up tour at WH. One of them was from South Hadley and another had gone to Mount Holyoke, so they knew the area. They LOVED the house, the story of the Skinner silk factory, and especially the amazing Belle Skinner, philanthropist, patron of the arts, and the second woman to be honored as a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. It was such a success that I'm going to offer to conduct another one next year when the Big Berks Conference is held at UMass.
I then went to Greenfield to Somer Draw. I shopped, schmoozed, sang, saw
harpnfiddle and
lady_jade_1, and ended up going out for a late dinner at a fine Chinese restaurant with
helwen and
userfitzw>. It was hot enough, and my Roman garb was cool enough, that I think I'm going to go completely Roman the next time I make it to Pennsic.
- Today I slept late, ran errands, and did a docent shift at WH. It was horribly muggy, and until a thunderstorm cleared the air it was cooler in the main house than it was outside, even though WH is not air conditioned and all the windows were closed. I was sucking down water like a camel all day, and have resolved to wear nothing but skirts for summer docenting sessions because otherwise I shall melt right in the middle of the beautiful, light-filled, and VERY VERY HOT conservatory.
Now I'm doing some reading and mentally shifting gears back to work. Thank God the office has reliable air conditioning....
