I took the laptop in for service and found that there's a bad hard drive. Fortunately I brought it in immediately instead of waiting until the drive was slag, so they'll be able to save my data. Still, not fun.
Chaz has been having our dead lappie looked at. It might also be recoverable, but once they start having trouble, it's usually time to save pennies to get a new one before very long, I have discovered.
