As the atheists say, if you don't exist, you don't know you don't exist, so you can't be afraid of nonexistence.
But I can't be an atheist, because I am positive there are souls that continue after death. I'm not sure what humans do, but cats can come and go as they please. :) Seriously, after Avalon's death, I was not only sure she came home with us-- Allan could even sense her doing the same things in the same places I did-- but many of my friends told me of their own visitations from their late pets. I've heard a few ghost encounters that convinced me, too, because I knew the persons well enough to know they are rational and honest.
On a totally unrelated note... Ellid? As in the Ellid from a certain black-and-red-themed website that specialized in the dissection of odd and unusual sites? If so, it's nice to see your name again! (I used a metallic-themed-feline sort of username.) Drop a line if you like.
