First, the con was great fun, and I wish I could have stayed until Monday. Maybe next year if finances permit!
My observations, in no particular order:
- The new hotel, the Westin Waterfront, is just gorgeous: soaring lobby, contemporary rooms in white and dark wood, beautiful meeting spaces. The restaurants are good, the staff was very friendly and helpful, and overall I was quite impressed. The only problem: it was *really* cold, especially Friday night. I hope this changes for future conventions, because it was incredibly annoying.
- The panels I attended were great, especially the ones moderated by
cluegirl. I ended up on one she was moderating, much to my surprise, along with
ravenna_c_tan and
gatewaygirl. I'm now semi-planning a steampunk outfit, although I'm wondering at the wisdom of doing so since I don't go to all that many cons these days.
The only problem was when I attended a panel on handling problems like RaceFail and its ilk. One of the panelists was either completely clueless or deliberately trying to provoke, and there were loud corrections and boos directed at him from the audience. Not fun.
- Didn't sell any scarves, but wasn't exactly expecting to. At least now I have enough to stock the church gift shop for the next six months! :)
- Had dinner with Walter Hunt and his wife Lisa, and caught up on all their news. Also ran into
gn_baz (who's coming to Conbust! Hooray!), Cluegirl, Gatewaygirl, Aquila_Dominus, Mijan, and plenty of other friends old and new. That's the best part of fandom IMHO.
- Bought one book by Walter, two by
otterdance, a book on discarded science, and a Vorkosigan book for Roomie as a thank you for medicating Siren over the weekend. I was somewhat surprised by how few booksellers there were, and how many steampunk clothing and sundries dealers were in evidence. I was severely tempted by some of the fannish t-shirts ("Halo Kittie" anyone?) but decided that books and food were more important :)
- There were some fabulous hall costumes, including a very slender girl as the Green Fairy of Absinthe, a guy wearing a Tron costume complete with LEDs, and a steampunk costume that, for once, had the properly harsh mid-19th century aniline dye colors. Great stuff!
All in all, a very enjoyable con in a lovely new setting. May it continue for years to come!

Date: 2011-01-18 11:32 pm (UTC)From:That was one of the best Arisias in a while, greatly helped by there being enough room for everything. Now there's the opposite problem... everyone is too spread out. There were people I know were there I never saw the whole time!
