What gets me isn't that he was actively looking to cheat. It's that he used his real name and photograph and thought no one would figure out what was going on.

He's actually got a decent body. It's the utter stupidity of thinking he could get away with this that turns this into high farce.

It's the look on his face. It doesn't go with the body.

I've never understood if powerful people who expose themselves in foolish ways are self-destructive or completely out of touch with reality. But the same could be said for wanted criminals who get caught for traffic violations.

It's rather like Sen. Larry Craig claiming that no, he wasn't gay when he tried to pick up a cop in a men's room, he just had a "wide stance" when he peed....

And the flexing pose, let's not forget that!

I'm sure it looked great when he practised it in the mirror every morning. Not so great on Gawker.

He's such a dumbass. I can't decide if I should be proud that he's not OUR dumbass (by like... 3 blocks or so).

He's no one's dumbass right now - he resigned at 5:00 pm this afternoon, a couple of hours after Gawker broke the story.

Perhaps I should have said he WASN'T our dumbass. ;^) Our local news got the resignation news at about 6 this evening.

I expect that his wife seriously wishes he weren't her dumbass. Or that she could possibly get away with dumping him into a landfill.

None of this sort of revelation surprises me anymore. Which is perhaps a sad thing.

Especially if it involves Republicans. I know that sounds unfair, but seriously? It's almost always a Republican, and he's almost always doing something so stupid that it takes one's breath away.

Yeah seriously. John Edwards is the only one the Dems have had in forever.

As someone pointed out elsewhere, Eliot Spitzer has to be included.

OTOH, the recent Democrat list consists of Spitzer, Edwards, and Clinton. The Republican list has Christopher Lee, David Vitter, Mark Sanford, Newt Gingrich, Larry Craig, and possibly John Boehner. It's like the odd little list that circulated a few years ago pointing that all but one or two prominent Republicans were on their second or third marriages, while most prominent Democrats were still married to their first spouses. No idea why it was so, but ever since Reagan broke the taboo on a divorced man winning the White House, the number of sex scandals and divorces involving Republicans has been higher than those involving Democrats.

And many of the divorce cases (McCain, Gingrich), involved dumping the old wife for the new one while she's in the hospital!

Do the Kennedys count? Or are the Camelot Years sufficiently long-ago to count as "forever"?

Farther back, FDR and Woodrow Wilson had mistresses, and Grover Cleveland fathered a child out of wedlock ("Ma, Ma, where's my Pa?" "Gone to the White House, ha ha ha!"). And Andrew Jackson found himself (briefly) in a bigamous marriage (but maybe that doesn't count, because he and Rachel thought that her divorce had already been finalized).

There have been Presidential extramarital shenanigans for yonks--it's just that there used to be a conspiracy of silence that kept such things from public view.

(N.B. I skew Democrat, myself, but prefer not to turn a blind eye to that party's horndogs....)

All very true! The only emendation I'd make is that Cleveland may have actually taken responsibility for the child in question to cover for a friend who was married. No one is quite sure. However, he did marry his much, much younger ward, Frances Folsom, becoming the first President to marry while in office.

Other possibilities:

Lyndon Johnson had an affair with his secretary.

Dwight Eisenhower had a blatant affair with his driver during his wartime service in Europe, almost divorcing his wife until it was pointed out that he'd destroy any political hopes if he did so.

Warren Harding not only had a mistress during his Presidential days, he had sex with her in a closet near his office AND fathered a daughter on her. Some conspiracy-minded historians think his wife may have poisoned him because of this.

George HW Bush allegedly had a mistress on his payroll, although this hasn't been confirmed.

Thomas Jefferson, of course, had Sally Hemings.

James Buchanan had a relationship with a man prior to his stint as President, who was referred to as his "wife" in Washington gossip.

So...I think we can all agree that politicians are not the best examples of pure living :) Recently there have been more scandals involving Republicans (and certainly weirder ones - see David Vitter), but over the years it probably evens out.

Not that Buchanan COULD have married the man he loved. Perhaps he should be praised for not having a sham marriage to hide behind.

There was someone else among the Democrats, Spitzer, I think his name was? Made a name for himself busting prostitution rings as a D.A., became a mayor or Lt. Gov. or something, and got his ass busted with a $5000 a night call girl.
Still, I think the sleaze level tends to be more embarrassing in the Republican cases. And they rarely resign, whereas Democrats usually do.

Um, does the name "John Edwards" ring any bells? Let's play fair and remember that it's not only Republicans who do stupid, dishonorable stuff.

Edwards, and Bill Clinton, were both guilty of being stupid jerks, but neither hit THIS level of stupidity.

I think the big Schadenfreude-incurring thing with Repubs is that the ones getting caught f*cking around are almost always the self-righteous "Family Values" types... Hypocrisy PLUS stupidity PLUS a$$hattery... the Moral Majority Trifecta!

I also must point out that the majority of politicians caught in such scandals are indeed Republicans. I don't know why this is, but it seems to be true.

Former Rep. Lee isn't a "family values" Republican, but more of a businessman turned politician. I still feel very bad for his wife and child, who are the true victims of this sorry mess.

Then again, Newt Gingrich is now supposedly running for President. I guess he figures that the women of American have forgotten how abominably he treated his first two wives, and his charming habit of dumping a spouse as soon as a younger, subordinate woman comes along.

Not to mention dropping the divorce bombshell on his first wife while she was in the hospital recovering from cancer surgery. Gives a whole new meaning to "When the going gets tough, the tough get going..." :-/

He later told the second wife that he was leaving her for an intern by means of a phone call while she attended her mother's birthday party. Not only did he wreck his wife's day, he wrecked the party.

I'm not sure I agree with you. Bill Clinton was married to a very high-profile woman, and not only carried on with that girl, but when caught, prevaricated on an international stage rather than manning up and saying, Oops, I did it, what a bonehead I am. "That depends on what your definition of "is" is" will surely go down in the record books.

Still, there can be no arguing that this guy was ripe for removal from the gene pool! What a moron. Thank goodness his former constituents are no longer subject to his decision-making "skills".

No twinks carrying luggage or giving massages. No wide-stance. Not even any steamy texts or phone sex. Just a very pitiful attempt at good old fashioned straight-up (pun intended) het cheating. And not even creative cheating, either! Did this guy sleep through How to Be a Sleazy Politician 101? /snark

Larry Craig's wide stance is still the standard for utterly lame excuses.
