It's not attractive, but the guy from Common Cause has a point - candidates have to live on something, and if they don't have private income. Possibly the solution would be a cap on personal salaries?

Right. For the same reason, I don't mind seeing my legislators' pay increased, as long as it comes with restrictions on what they can accept from individuals, corporations, lobbyists, etc. He who pays the piper calls the tune, and I'd rather my elected officials were paid by the public.

I'm a little less impressed by this case because the source of the money was precisely individuals, corporations, lobbyists, etc. rather than taxpayers.

And in any case, the real issue in this case is transparency and hypocrisy.

Agreed on need for transparency and the hypocrisy bit. Getting paid in general, okay.
