Based on the weird scraping, thumping noises over the dining room table tonight, I seem to have squirrels or possibly bats in the attic.

Great.

My boyfriend's parents use mothballs to keep the critters out and it works.

We had those sounds when we had rats. I don't like killing creatures, but they were a real problem, especially since the wiring went through there as well. A chunk of rat bait up there and the thumping and scraping got a bit more... disturbing and then stopped.
Otoh, if you have bats, a wildlife rescue group might want to assist in their removal for free. Healthy bats are important.

It's amazing how much noise one squirrel can make galloping across the roof.

Bats OTOH are generally pretty quiet -- you're more likely to hear scritching noises and a little quiet chittering than scrapes or thumps. Bats are pretty good at staying up on the ceiling and rarely fall down bump ;)
