Let's see...

The Republicans have spent years alienating women, blacks, Hispanics, LGBT voters, and the young. The only constituency they have left is middle aged and elderly whites, so why their presidential nominee just chose a man who wants to dismantle Social Security and turn Medicare into an unaffordable voucher system is beyond me.

Ouch.

I'm with you about the backlash. That budget plan Ryan presented was so bad the Republicans didn't touch during the midterms because it was so toxic. Why do they think the American people will embrace it now?

To me it's a signal that
1) they don't care about 'being popular' because to their mindset, things are messed up and what they have to do won't be popular but *must* be done.
2) they believe absolutely and without any doubt that their backers/funders have greased all the right palms to ensure their election, and that,
3) they are actually counting on the controversy to distract people and also on Dem/Ind complacency since too many now believe this choice means R/R stand no chance.

A huge part of the Republican strategy seems to be relying on their supporters to vote against their own best interests.

It's become a pattern in recent years that the R's choose rabid VP candidates in order to bring in the extremist wing of the party, while D's choose boring, mainstream VP candidates in order to avoid alienating swing voters. Sometimes one strategy wins, sometimes the other.

2012: Biden (boring) vs. Ryan (rabid, young)
2008: Biden (boring) vs. Palin (rabid, young)
2004: Edwards (young) vs. Cheney (not rabid, but appealing to the militaristic side of the party)
2000: Lieberman (boring) vs. Cheney (see above)
1996: Gore (boring) vs. Kemp (rabid)
1992: Gore (boring) vs. Quayle (rabid, young)
1988: Bentsen (old, boring) vs. Quayle (rabid, young)
