It's pretty clear why the alternate opening didn't make it - it's slow, and adds nothing except foreshadowing that Maria Hill is going to be trouble in the future. But this...oh man. I can see why they cut it since the tone is so achingly sad, but wow does it set up a couple of later scenes and character interactions

Thanks for the link. Oddly enough, I'm finally watching Captain America on Netflix this morning.

Yeah, a lot of Steve's first reactions to Tony are really well explained in that scene with him and the files. He doesn't have the word for it, but what he means to say to Tony is "You're more a celebutante with a big stick than a hero."

Though I still think the staff had a lot to do with all of them saying those thoughts out loud. Oh, no question about that. The staff was trying to goad them all, especially the big guns, before they could actually stop Loki - note that the only one who was arguing for sanity was Natasha, who had just neatly cracked Loki open before he realized it. But Steve was primed to think Tony was a philistine the moment he opened his sketchbook in that cafe - the Metlife building is one of the ugliest in Midtown, and the cupola/penthouse/Dr. Seuss thing that Stark Industries supposedly slapped on top of it is not precisely gorgeous. Add in that the last major skyscraper that Steve the WPA artist would have seen go up was the Chrysler Building, and....

Never got to it. If memory serves, J and I were supposed to go after he got back from Pennsic, but we never found a day to go together before it left the theaters. He ended up seeing it on one of those days when he needed to kill time between getting out of work & his D&D game.

Sorry about that! Not sure what happened - and I agree about selling God like cereal.
