*dances with delight*

In other good news, I have an interview next Friday. The only weirdness is that they want to do skills testing first. Given that I have over twenty years' experience as an office worker, am I right to feel slightly insulted at this? Or what?

I wouldn't feel insulted about skills testing at all.

First, it's probably standard for everyone they consider hiring. Second, they may have experience with some people in the past whose skills weren't up to snuff, regardless of what their resume says. Third, it may help to give them indications of where your true strengths lie, which will help them determine if you're the best fit for the job -- looking for the technical fit as well as the personality fit.

If if they've already had some interaction with you and think you'd be perfect, they should still do the test, as a matter of fairness to all people applying for the position.

What helwen said. I've worked with people with over twenty years' experience of charming their way past their lack of actual skills, and I can't help wishing there had been a test or probationary period to weed them out before they wasted my time, jeopardized client relationships, etc. It's unfortunate that it means you have to take a test, but I frankly understand where they're coming from.

On a far less cynical note, congratulations on the paper!

Nah, I'm sure it's just standard operating procedure.

Congratulations and good luck!

Nope. Down here in Connecticut, drug testing and various forms of skill testing are almost mandatory for working in the insurance industry. Didn't bother me.

Agreed with the others above - I've got over *thirty* years of office experience, but still get tested! It's simply standard practice - they have to treat all applicants alike.

And congratulations on the paper!
