I also received several very useful PDF documents from my rental agent, including instructions on using Italian payphones, a list of restaurants, groceries, and suchlike (including a take out place right down the street), and other merchants, including the oldest fabric store in Florence.

Dear God. Please don't let me buy fabric. Please don't let me buy fabric. Please don't let me buy fabric....

Pshaw, of course you must buy fabric! You are spending all this money to go to Florence and you're not going to buy fabric? Why not just say Dear God don't let me eat pasta... :)

Cronopio, corrupting your bank account since 1959.

But I'm going for research! I was going to be good! I was -

Ah, the heck with it. I'll see what they have!

I second cronopio, of course you must buy fabric.

Buy fabric for me? ::looks hopeful::

Date: 2007-10-03 01:29 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] ellid.livejournal.com
I'll see what they have. A lot depends on a) my budget and b) how much I can cram into my suitcase. I don't trust the Italian mail system.

Oh, BTW - the family that owns the apartment I'll be renting claims descent from Etrucan nobility. Believe it or not!

LINEN!! WOOL!! LINEN!! WOOL!!

hmmmm....yes, you must go pet the fabric. And buy something.

*egrin*

ENABLER!!!!!!!

Actually, G. Lisio appears to be a high-end silk company that specializes in (get this) the recreation of medieval weaving techniques. They host terribly expensive, in-depth seminars on weaving 16th century style cut velvets, and I would give my eyeteeth to see their workshop.

ARGH.

Congrats on the trip! If you don't want to buy fabric, leave the wallet at home? Anyway, having been to Italy, I can say it's a wonderful place. Try the gelato limone (if you like citrus).

Where did you go in Italy? The gelato sounds yummy!

Let's see.

Bologna
Siena
Grosseto e mare (little town on the Tuscan coast)
Genoa
Venezia
Roma

And several others that I've forgotten. Of them all, I really enjoyed Venice and the Tuscan coast. Rome was cool, but I think I was spoiled by my mind's eye thinking it would look like it did 2000 years ago. ;) The Etruscan ruins were quite neat. The one place I wish I had gotten too was Firenze. Okay, two. I would have liked to go to Sicily.

How was Venice? I'd love to go there someday, but right now it's Firenze all the way...:)

Venice had great atmosphere and neat things to see. (The Doge's palace and the Bridge of Sighs to the prison, for example.) I would just stick with Firenze on this trip since you're getting an in-depth experience.

I'm going to Impruneta to see the cushion, of course, and if I have time I'll visit Siena. I've been mildly obsessed with the frescoes of the Effects of Good and Bad Government since I was in college so might as well see them..:)

I have fond memories of gianduja myself....

That's chocolate with hazelnuts to the rest of the world.

(sigh)

You are right not to trust the Italian postal service, believe me ^^; Expecially with packages, it can be pretty awful.
I'm so sad I'm so far away from Firenze, I would have liked to meet with you!
Oh, and if you have an Italian friend, remember to go shopping only with her and let her handle all the payments, because Italian cafes and other places that don't have price tags on their merchandise tend to... ehr... rise the price a bit when they deal with foreigner customers.
Just saying :P

Where do you live?

Date: 2007-10-03 11:24 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] dungeons-master.livejournal.com
Sardinia, sadly. Not so far but there's sea to cross and all that...

*is jealous* The fabric shopping sounds wonderful. We could use some really nice fabric right now. Heheh...something tells me I'm going to be buying a lot online in the next few months. *random*

It's really awesome that you managed to make this trip work out for you. I have to say (please excuse the sap honestly) that it's definately making me want to get up and travel and do all of the things that I said would be great to do but never really believed that I would do.

Please God, let her buy fabric and show it to me, please God, let her buy fabric and show it to me...

It's probably too far a trip, and you might not care. But just in case...

If I were taking a trip to Italy I'd have to take a side-trip to Mantua to check out the fresco of the heroes and heroines in person.
