Just clean the area out and see your doctor ASAP. I don't think it will do anything more than jam food particles into the open area around the gum and tooth, so if that bothers you wait until you seer him to eat.
I've had this happen before, esp. with temp. crowns on molars. The tooth underneath the crown is usually sealed very well. The crown tends to be there to provide a biting surface and for cosmetic reasons (depending upon where it is in the mouth--like a front tooth for instance). I wouldn't worry too much. Call your dentist and get an appointment as soon as you can.
