Tomorrow a contractor is coming over to give an estimate on having the living room painted, a bad clapboard replaced by the front door, and new flooring put down in the living room, dining room, kitchen, and hallway. Roomie has kindly agreed to be available and will take notes. I want to get at least one more estimate, preferably two, before I make a commitment.

This weekend's agenda:

Pricing refrigerators and pocket doors for the basement. Local flisters: I know that [livejournal.com profile] helwen used Sears and liked it, and Una and her mother used Manny's. Has anyone heard good or bad about Bernie's? Or some other appliance place? I pretty much know what I want, and no, I do not want extra appliances like air conditioners, dishwashers, and a handy new combined vacuum cleaner/toiler scum remover that will also steam clean rugs. Also, I have no use for an automatic ice maker. I just want a plain, basic refrigerator that will keep my food cold, not one that whistles a choice of five popular tunes while giving me the morning stock reports.

Really.

Oh, man, no auto ice maker? That's what I miss most living in apartments. I can deal without the water & ice dispenser in the door (seriously, I'm not THAT lazy), but I really like the auto ice maker. Out of curiosity, because it seems so foreign to me to NOT want one - why not?

Wish I were up in the area and had some pointers. Instead, I'll just ask questions and procrastinate on the studying ;)

I rarely drink anything with ice in it, and Roomie makes ice cubes from the filtered water in her Brita pitcher. I think it's due to the difference in climate between Florida and Massachusetts...we only get really hot weather for a couple of months a year. However, I may end up with an ice maker anyway since it seems to be standard on a lot of models...;)

That's understandable, then... I don't like drinking beverages with ice if I don't have a straw; I think it's the sensation of the ice hitting my mouth and/or teeth. I'd much rather drink a plain glass of cold water from a jug kept in the fridge. But - my mixed drinks/cocktails require ice.

and DUH of course region has something to do with it. How silly of me to forget.

The tooth thing is a big reason why I don't go for ice much anymore. I have a lot of fillings and three crowns in my molars, and anything really, really cold hurts.

You know that the refrigerator that we got from Sears doesn't have an icemaker, right? Just a simple refrigerator with the freezer at the top (more efficient than a side-by-side). No bells and/or whistles. EnergyStar. That's all.

Really? What kind was it, a Kenmore? Consumer Reports names the basic Kenmore and the basic Frigidaire as its Best Buys, but I still would like to take a look around.

Also, I can only get a 30" wide unit because that's how big the space is in my kitchen. That pretty much takes out the side-by-sides (not that I want one anyway...Betty had one in her basement and I really didn't like it much).

I just got a nice 20cu ft. GE fridge from Home Despot. Delivered and installed by GE. It's got a bottom freezer, but no ice maker, water dispenser or any of that silliness. Nicely laid out inside. About $1100 with extended warranty to 5 years.

It's all energy star and that too!

*nods* Energy Star is definitely high on my list. This place is all electric and I'm hoping to cut as much from the bill as possible.

Really interested in reading this since we're in the market for a fridge right now. It has to be a narrow (60 cm one and tall 200 cm to maximize space). I'd been told it was hard to find simple fridges in the US, and your experience supports that.
