So glad I've never bought any of his faux folksy books, even if I do sometimes listen to his radio show because there's literally nothing else on. What was he thinking?

It's a subtly disguised insult. Saying he has a "voice for print" is implying that his voice lacks a certain mellifluousness. Like saying he has a "face for radio" -- i.e. he''s too ugly to be on TV.
